Are Pownce And Twitter Pretty Much The Same?

PownceI ask you–Is there no end to the social platforms that are floating around? It seems like as soon as I think I’ve got a handle on the major ones, I find out one of my friends is already submerged into another one.

That’s what happened today when I was reading the new posts on David Krug’s Twitter account. I followed a link he shared, and was taken to his Pownce account, which basically does the same thing as Twitter as far as I can tell.

Mixed Realities Create Art: Twitter Fountain In Second Life

It’s interesting enough to know that when we type updates into Twitter that people all over this world can see what we’re thinking in real time, but you might not have realized that your tweets were also reaching the citizens of the virtual world of Second Life.

New World Notes reports:

created by UK developer Daden Limited, the Twitter Fountain of Second Life takes the public feed from the Web 2.0 site, converting each Tweet into a literal thought balloon that burbles up from a koi pond located on Daden’s SL island. (Visit the Twitter Fountain by clicking the SLURL teleport at this link)

Who Are The Most Web 2.0 Savvy Presidential Candidates?

soapboxSocial platforms are playing a huge role in the political world, both for the voters trying to gather information or express opinions, and also for candidates who wish to get their two cents out to their younger, web savvy constituents.

No longer can anyone use the excuse “I didn’t vote because I didn’t have enough information about the candidates.” The truth is the information we have is bubbling over.

Politweets: Mr. Twitter Goes To Washington

Politweets: Twittering To The White HouseKristin Gorski has a fascinating article at techPresidents about a new town in Twitterville called Politweets.

Gorski says:

A new website called Politweets gleans the “tweets” which mention political candidates’ names and then displays them on its site in real time. What Politweets captures hints at public opinion and trends regarding the election. It has also become a news outlet, where private citizens, traditional media, and even the candidates’ themselves tweet about facts, opinion and web links to anyone who reads.

Twitter Angels Raise Money For Grieving Family

Twitter AngelsAshley Spencer, age 29, passed away on Tuesday, January 8 in a car crash, leaving her husband (Peter), brand new baby (Lucy) and a toddler son (Toby).

Almost immediately word spread throughout Ashley’s Twitter community and with shock and grief her online friends rallied together to do what they could for Ashley’s family. Together, in only 10 days they raised over $8,000 to help with the funeral costs and any other needs her family may have.

It’s amazing that so much can be done in such a short about of time. What is even more amazing is that most of the people involved in this initiative were either online friends of Ashley’s or didn’t know her at all, but only heard about her death through the web grapevine.

Some people may be wondering– “Why would you do something like this for someone you only knew through Twitter?”

Using Twitter To Workstream

twitter

A workstream is a live updated record of work you’ve completed. When doing group work with remote colleagues, it allows you to keep track of what everyone else is doing. When working solo, it helps you keep track of your own productivity.

I’ve started by creating a top secret workstream on twitter that allows me to keep track of my time, and my progress on various inter-related projects and this is a great way to utilize twitter and it could be super useful in a social way if I actually had multiple members of a team working on these project but instead it’s just me. Maybe my next two person project I will utilize twitter in this unique way.

Introduction To Twitter

Chris Garrett one of my Twitter friends has written up a great introduction to Twitter aimed at the blogging community but this is also applicable to all of us as well.

Here’s a quick tease of his article:
If you haven’t tried it, Twitter is a kind of online messaging system. It is like a group chat where you post 140 character messages or “Tweets”. You can post links or just text. URLs get converted into TinyURLs if they are beyond a certain length or you can paste short URLs from the service of your choice. WordPress plugins and online services make hooking up your blog feed easy, so every post you make goes to Twitter as a URL.

Just like with other social sites, you add contacts and other contacts add you. Once you have a few followers discussions form. You direct messages to an individual using the @ prefix, eg. “This message is just for @chrisgarrett”. Everyone gets to see these that are following the sender, but these messages appear in the “Replies” tab so you get to see all the replies made to you, regardless of if you are following the sender (optional preference). There is also a DM feature for private messages.

Twhirl

twhirlTwhirl has made my return to Twitter much more enjoyable. I enjoy Twitter to stay connected to friends, geniune ones, and co workers that interact with on a daily basis. Not just random folks I’m looking to evangelize. I like to use Twitter to deepen relationships not fluff them up or use it as a status symbol. It’s about being more real. I like Twhirl in that it allows me to be more effective with the time crunch I suffer from daily.

twhirl is the latest Twitter Client I’ve come across using the Adobe AIR package. AIR makes it possible to run the same code on both Windows and Mac (others?) which I like. I hate finding some cool app and it only be for one system. As a developer, I use Windows, Linux and a Mac and I like finding tools that work on all three systems, which is rare. Adobe’s AIR is a step in the right direction.

What is Twitter?

The people we surround ourselves with have an incredible effect on our lives, and I’ve always chosen my friends carefully for that reason. This works the same way the moon changes our world by creating tides, influencing the earth’s rate of spin, and so on. The earth would be devoid of life without the moon, and so that’s one reason I like to stay connected to the people that inspire me. Twitter allows this influence to exist over distance and time, exerting a special relativity that bends the rules of meaningful connections in our lives.

by Bill Carroll

I’ve often pondered my fascination with twitter and I think Bill Carroll did an amazing job summing up what I love about the site.
